A Solo Exhibiton
“REMNANTS REMNANATS REMNANTS”, Grant M Brownlow’s first Museum Solo Exhibition, presents recently created works on paper and panel at The Saginaw Art Museum in Saginaw, MI. The title of the show, grabbed from the cracked front window of an appliance repair shop, relates to the relationship of the region’s past industrial might and resulting post-industrial present.
Brownlow’s Artwork collides these eras in collage-like compositions utilizing imagery of the Midwest’s scattered post-industrial spaces with iconic images of it’s manufacturing glory days. The works are Brownlow’s ruminations on his inherited midwestern psyche – reflections on the region’s overshadowing history within his daily life and present. Informed by his upbringing around industrial spaces including plastics factories, auto body shops, racetracks and half-abandoned warehouses, the artworks confront ideas including class, identity, and inherited self-destructive tendencies within the region and his experience.
Empty beer cans, old tires, half-faded signage and sparkling chrome bumpers, cover the surfaces like faded tattoos on the neighborhood mechanic – a mix of era and aura upon a single plane and present.

Reception: Friday, September 20th, 6-9pm
A Solo Exhibition
Grant M Brownlow introduces “Pothole Poetic” a solo exhibition of recently created paintings and prints at The Bindery in Lafayette, Indiana. “Pothole Poetic” presents collage-like compositions colliding imagery of the midwestern US region’s prolific manufacturing past with its rusted daily present in an exploration of self and influence. These artworks are Brownlow’s poetic internal explorations of the post-industrial midwestern psyche, reflections on the region’s overshadowing industrialized history with its continuing narrative in the present. These resulting artworks shift between nostalgic layers of appropriated text from long-dead automobiles, tenderly rendered objects of daily life, and fast abstracted marks blurring the planes.

Postchrome is a nod to the postindustrial hangover of the Midwestern United States, squinting through chrome mirrors and split windshields at the region's prolific past and degraded present. Banal daily moments of today combine with nostalgic images of the region’s yesterday. Mounds of corded tires behind the pole barn, gleaming chrome letters off patinaed Cadillacs, a dusted work coat clinging to the banister. These floating moments ebb between eras and auras in reflection of self and cultural influences.
Stacked layers become internal explorations of the postindustrial midwestern psyche - reveries of my understanding of self, encompassed in the degraded influences of the past and the rusted landscape of the present. This dogpiling of imagery explores what it means to be of-and-from a region by-and-for yesterday. Utilizing classic American automotive imagery from the glorified 1940’s to the 1970s, these cropped texts and fragmented icons become reflections on the Fordist boom and its monolithic machines of lore.
Through layers of enamel, silkscreen, lithographs, and oil, reflections of self appear and fade in waves of chaos and calm. Varying from tenderly rendered moments to desperate swirls of thrown color, the works reflect the varied states involved in introspective analysis. At times anxious and convoluted, others calm, clear and contained.
The importance of these works is not in the elements themselves but their union.
The importance is in the mass and the mess.
